I don’t know about you, but there’s few things I hate more than spending a lot of money on an expensive perfume just to have the smell fade within a couple of hours. My all time favorite scent is Tom Ford’s Lost Cherry Perfume, but the sillage and longevity unfortunately leave a lot to be desired. Recently, I discovered Fragrance layering and it’s been an absolute game changer in the longevity of my perfumes!
Fragrance layering is an art, and mastering it gives the ability to authentically express your personality and ‘fragrance aura’. Not only that, but it extends the wear of the fragrance throughout the whole day, without requiring multiple applications.
Read on to learn all the tips and tricks to becoming a fragrance layering pro!
The basic concepts of fragrance layering are to either stick to the same fragrance family (floral, citrus, woody, fruity, etc) or to use opposing sides of the Fragrance Wheel-
How to layer fragrance for the most impact:
- Start in the shower with a body wash that has a similar aromatic profile to the scent you’re using.
- Right out of the shower, moisturize with a scented body lotion to lock in the fragrance of the body wash and also the moisture introduced to your skin from the shower. This is an important step in scent layering because it allows the fragrance to cling to the oils in the lotion along with the moisture on your skin.
- Lock everything in with your favorite body oil.
- Finally, top everything off with your fragrance of choice.
Personally, I’m a die hard fan of Tom Ford perfumes. I have all three in the cherry lineup: Lost Cherry, Cherry Smoke and Electric Cherry. Those can all be interchangeably layered, depending on the vibe you’re going for. On date nights, I like to spray Cherry Smoke and then top it off with Lost Cherry. The smoky dark cherry of Cherry Smoke pairs very well with the almond and liqueur notes in Lost Cherry. To ensure the scent lasts, I start with Jergens Cherry Almond lotion as a base. It’s perfection, every time!
Another winning combination for me is Tom Ford Rose Prick, topped with Jo Malone Red Roses. I find the pepper and spice of Rose Prick layers very well with the pure rose garden scent of Jo Malone’s Red Roses. A great lotion to pair with this combo would be OUAI Melrose Place lotion.
Now you’re ready to layer like a pro! Let me know in the comments what your favorite combos are- I would love to hear!
